The River of Life
For as long as I can remember, the Mississippi River has fascinated me. The river itself is mysterious and powerful and seems the keeper of deep wisdom. It is ancient and yet constantly new in every moment, stoic and yet completely unpredictable.
The people that live along the great river seem to have a bit of its spirit flowing in their veins. Somehow life along the Mississippi seems a little more deeply enlivened. The communities, farms and plantations along its banks may be elegant, earthy, tattered or even gritty, but there is always a certain vibrancy that is hard to name but easy to feel. In a country that seems to have been homogenized by franchises and green Interstate signs, river communities seem to remember their unqiue heritage and to celebrate it with a gusto that is genuine and refreshing.
It is this spirit that has drawn me to this project. In images and words, I intend to honor the life that the Mississippi nurtures.
The first four installments of this project that could consume a lifetime are presented here - just click the thumbnails below. Thanks for joining me!
